James Oakman – arrived before 1832

James Oakman was born about 1803 in Ireland and died in 1882 in Poultney, Rutland, Vermont. Poultney is a small town in the State of Vermont, situated between the foothills of the Green and Taconic Mountain Ranges. Vermont is located in the northeast corner of America.

James married his first wife, Eleanor (Elenor/Ellen) Graham abt 1830.

  • Martha Oakman (abt 1849 – 1880)
  • Elizabeth Oakman (5 January 1849 – 7 January 1849)

Eleanor died on 15 October 1852 in Vermont and was buried at Hampton Hill Cemetery, Washington County.

Shortly after Eleanor’s death, James married again to Margaret Hunter on 24 December 1852. They had the following children:

  • Robert H Oakman (27 November 1854 – 1934)
  • John Oakman (27 August 1855 – 1918)
  • George Bliss Oakman (30 September 1857 – 1930)
  • Charles Henry Oakman (August 1859 – 1920)
  • William John Oakman (abt 1860 – 1927)

Census Records

1840 – James and Eleanor were living in Poultney, Rutland, Vermont.  Census returns show James & Eleanor with one child under 5 yrs and one child aged between 5-10 yrs

1850 – James, 47 yrs old, was living in Poultney and working as a Fireman.  Living with him were his wife Ellen (40 yrs) and children Julia M (11 yrs), Mary (8 yrs), James Jr (6 yrs), Martha (6 months) and Thomas Graham (78 yrs).  Thomas may have been Eleanor’s father.

1860 – James, 56 yrs old, was working as a Day Labourer in Poultney.  Living with him were his wife Margaret McHume (21 yrs), Martha (10 yrs), Robert (6 yrs), John (5 yrs), George (3 yrs), Charles (1 yr) and William (2 months).

1870 – James was in Troy, Tensselaer, New York State, working as a labourer.  James would have been about 66 yrs old by this time but the Census records states he was 52.  Perhaps James had reduced his age in order to obtain employment.

1880 – James, 76 yrs old, was a widower once again, working as a labourer and living in Poultney with his son William in the home of James’ widowed daughter, Margaret Alford and her young family.

James died on 5 May 1882, when he was 79 years old, of Typhoid Pneumonia in Poultney and is buried in the Hampton Hill Cemetery, Hampton, Washington County.
